Art of Belonging Workshops
Let's Design for Belonging!
Join us at the Wassmuth Center for community workshops that make belonging visible through art and writing. Because belonging doesn’t happen by accident. It gets designed, through the choices we make about who is welcomed, who is seen, and who has a real place in the room. Each Art of Belonging Workshop is guided by a guest artist and includes the opportunity to create as we gather in community.
- Audience: All ages are welcome!
- Cost: Free – registration required
- Materials: Provided
- Time: 6:30 – 8:00 PM
Connect across community, learn about the Wassmuth Arts Awards program, and create memories and art with us!
Thank you to the Boise Department of Arts and History and the Hansberger Foundation for their generous support of these workshops.
Upcoming
Painting with Bobby Gaytan
Join us for a special evening with celebrated artist Bobby Gaytan, whose art is featured here at the Center and across Idaho, as he shares personal stories of belonging. Bobby will also guide participants in a hands-on acrylic painting workshop. Every guest will paint their own symbol of belonging, a special reminder of how art can make belonging visible.
Please join us! Because every human right — to speak freely, to be educated, to live in dignity, to take part in the life of a community — depends on belonging, feeling that you have a rightful place among others.
Free event – all supplies provided.

Writing with CMarie Fuhrman
Every sentence makes a small world.
Through poetry, conversation, and generative writing, you’re invited to explore how even the smallest choices in language shape belonging. A simple and can make room for another person, another truth, or even a contradiction. And sometimes what we leave unsaid creates the greatest space for a reader.
CMarie Fuhrman, whose book Salmon Weather: Writing from the Land of No Return was recently named the 2026 Idaho Book of the Year, will help us look at writing as a place we build—and consider what it means to make that place more generous.
Please join this intergenerational gathering as we share different experiences of home, relationship, community, and belonging. CMarie will lead us in exercises that are accessible to writers of all experience levels.
Free event – all supplies provided.

When is a time you felt truly seen? Like you really belong?
“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”
-JAMES BALDWIN, AMERICAN WRITER
