The Do Good Plaza

A Community Tribute

The Do Good Plaza is an upcoming community space on the Wassmuth Center’s campus created to both honor the life of
Braden Caldwell and spread the message that he adopted as his personal mantra – Do Good.

Braden Caldwell tragically died in a car accident the summer of 2022
in-between his sophomore and junior year at Bishop Kelly High School. In September 2021, Braden’s older sister bought him a Cotopaxi hat that was embroidered with the simple phrase “Do Good.” Braden embraced those words wholeheartedly, bringing light, joy, and kindness wherever he went. In his short life, he lived the Do Good mantra in everything he did. Since his passing, the Bishop Kelly community as well as friends and family of the Caldwells have embraced that message as a reminder of our own humanity and the easiest way to ensure that we show up every day thinking about how we can improve the human experience.

Inspired by both Braden and a quote by Miep Gies — the woman who helped the Frank family while they were in hiding — the Do Good Plaza is envisioned as a peaceful and powerful gathering space for those in the community, especially young adults, to reflect, learn, and be inspired to make a positive impact on the human experience.

The new space will begin with a new, meandering path that links 9th Street at the southern tip of the new building to the trestle bridge Greenbelt entrance to the Memorial – overlooking the south Quote Circle. To accommodate the plan, we’ll be reworking the shape and height of the existing waterfall, relocating two of our trees, adding lampposts for security lighting, moving in a featured art piece, fourteen half-circle benches, two large lead donor pavers, and other dedicated bricks to recognize our supporters.

Even an ordinary...teenager can, in their own way, turn on a small light in a dark room.
